IMPORTANT THOUGHTS FROM THE Verdugo Woodlands Elementary School COMMUNITY

THINGS PEOPLE APPRECIATE

WAVE –

This fundraising organization makes it possible for VW kids to have library assistants, computer lab assistants, CARE counselor, all the arts program, etc. It’s simply fantastic.

I appreciate the parent volunteers –

Our school has so many wonderful parent volunteers, I believe this creates a beneficial environment for all of our children.

Weekly reminders –

Weekly reminders are very helpful in the busy schedule of parents. They help me and other parents to stay informed of the events and schedule accordingly.

there’s a music program –

WAVE and PTA –

Thankful that our students have access to Art, Music, Theatre, robotics etc sponsored by the PTA as well as events like Father Daugther Dance and Mother Son night to name a few

SOME CONCERNS

The school year should start in Spetember after Labor day. –

The school year is starting to early and we are missing out on summer. Also, it is extremely hot on the campus and the outdoor time on the playground with no shade is crazy. My son was complaining how extremely hot it was doing PE in 90- 100 dregee weather especially exercising on the black top.

Lack of green space. How do we get the kids playing on grass, not asphalt? –

How will the above be dealt with, with upcoming construction?

extreme congestion, traffic –

I am concerned about overexpansion. –

Building more classrooms may help with the overcrowding but it won’t help with the nightmare of picking up and dropping off students. That will not change. It is also a safety issue and as a resident on North Verdugo Road, I find it a nuisance as well.

Fragmented Community –

Decision to “close” campus to parents has negatively impacted the VW community. There are very few opportunities for parents to get to know each other. Involved parents are what distinguish the school from others. It’s what makes VW VW. That key to VW’s success is now at risk.

OTHER THOUGHTS SHARED

Concerned about the overcrowded student population –

This issue has been dealt with but we are concerned going forward about what the planed construction will do to exacerbate the problem.

the lack of parking and restrictions on parking make volunteering a –

hardship. There are very few parking spots for volunteers. The parking restrictions are intended for the college students to not park in the neighborhood all day. But the parents are the people most affected. If you want to pickup your sick child, you have to park a couple of blocks away.

I would like to see smaller classes –

We need shade in the kindergarden playground. They are all in full sun. –

It is too crowded. –

Staff are trying their best, but it is too crowded.
