IMPORTANT THOUGHTS FROM THE Monte Vista Elementary School COMMUNITY

THINGS PEOPLE APPRECIATE

Dedicated Teachers and Staff –

Most of the teachers and staff are extremely dedicated to our children’s education.

Art, PE and Music –

Very happy that Art,PE and Music programs are in the school. Would like more art and PE but very glad to have what we have. So glad that orchestra is made available to all children.

I appreciate that my children have library, computer, music and that the –

teachers have the equipment they need to teach.

After school activities and classes –

The school now offers a wide range of after school classes, which not only enriches students, but also helps alleviate after school traffic.

Lots of enrichment classes –

I like that the school is offering a variety of after school enrichment classes.

SOME CONCERNS

More outside time to play and run around –

Physical exercise is so important to both a kid’s physical and mental well-being.

Over crowding of students at Monte Vista –

Class sizes of regular program as well as FLAG programs are getting larger over the past few years. I am concern with the level of supports and individual attention the students are getting. We moved to the area for the quality of education. But the benefit appears to be diminishing.

Healthy Choices? –

We have healthy choices as a core value. Why do we still give popsicles and ice cream as a reward? Why is candy used so often in the classroom as in incentive to behave? Let’s actually give them healthy choices, like more time to play outside.

Focus on the whole child. –

Common Core is forcing us to be more concerned about learning than social/emotional development. We are ignoring children’s concerns, anxiety, kindness etc. Because of this the kids are growing up to be bullies or to feel so badly about themselves that they are committing suicide.

Whether i-ready is doing what it’s supposed to –

I’m still not sure what i-ready is doing. Our teacher realigned students after the initial assessment. If that had to occur, then isn’t it hindering rather than helping? I accept that testing will be done on computers so students need to be comfortable. But is i-ready reinforcing class instruction?

OTHER THOUGHTS SHARED

I love the arts education at CV. –

It is fantastic to see so many kids singing, playing musical instruments and dancing at a public high school. I am endlessly grateful to our teachers in the arts areas for their dedication and spectacular instruction.

It is very important that the caferteria food be good –

Kids have a better chance of doing well when they eat healthy and tasty food

Our school has amazing talent. –

Our school has amazing talent in its teachers, parents and staff. Focusing that energy and talent on a common goal would serve us well.

I really appreciate the principal sending home individual messages in the –

Student report card.

The success of MV is a function of the incredble level of parent support. –

The parents/community support Monte Vista students/teachers far beyond what would be expected in public schools. Parents volunteer time copying, running groups, running the PTA, etc. Parents/community financially support the school providing tools and an environment that far exceeds other schools.
