IMPORTANT THOUGHTS FROM THE Mark Keppel Elementary School COMMUNITY

THINGS PEOPLE APPRECIATE

Very nice & kind staff –

We have excellent staff in our school office .They are all nice , kind and helpful .

Arts programs –

The amount of arts activities are always amazing and especially how they are integrated into the school are wonderful.

New Building/Field –

The new construction of the buildings and the new field are a nice addition to the school. My son loves to play soccer on the new grassy field and my younger son loves his newly constructed classroom where they have a new smart board and a new air conditioning unit.

performing arts programs are really great for the children –

it is very important for the children to express their own self through dancing, drawing, music which is what Mark Keppel focuses on and is excellent at

The integration of the arts in the classroom. –

The arts are an invaluable part of educating our children. I feel that letting kids’ creativity be a part of the learning process is really beneficial for them.

SOME CONCERNS

Active Play –

Younger students are restricted from play that is “too active”. The desire to protect children from injury is reasonable, but we shouldn’t encourage sedentary lifestyle. Accommodations for running should be made, e.g. more grassy areas, particularly for kinder students.

The new 21st Century Homework Policy –

I’m concerned among many other parents that not getting enough practice is going to catch up to the kids especially as they go into higher grades and move on to middle school. This policy has shifted the responsibility on to the parents from the teachers who would assign better based on lesson plan.

Better communication among administration, teachers, and parents. –

The school community needs to find ways to better communicate, especially when it comes to implementing changes (such as Common Core, homework policy, new tests, etc.).

Too much is expected of teachers –

Teachers are asked to teach academics (common core lessons), art (visual, music & dance), PE and computers. We are lacking in time to plan & are also expected to teach in all these domains proficiently. It would be very helpful to have PE teachers and computer teachers to help lessen the burden.

Classes are too large. We cannot give quality education to students when –

there are so many needy children. The years we went to twenty students we had a wonderful time trying new things and exploring lots of different activities. With more than half of our students having English as a second language we have enormous challenges to get even the basic skills taught.

OTHER THOUGHTS SHARED

It is great that we got the grant!!! We needed this money. –

We enjoy the programs that we have and we want to keep them going. Therefore, funding was needed.

Mark Keppel has a very unique program that teaches kids subjects –

through art . Students are more interested when subjects are introduced to them in different ways and are better prepared for the common core .

PTA and MKS work hard alongside school admin to bring events and continue –

to support arts education.

Appreciate the opportunities to participate in diverse activities –

The combination of music, art, drama, dance and even the experiences with technology are so valuable. Together these experiences provide a great balance for the growth of my child and I really appreciate it all very much.

study hall –

I wish there was an after school study hall where students could attend and get help as needed from staff. I wish the new Common Core books were available to have a set at home so the parents could be more involved. I like the iReady system. I wish there were more sports available for young studen
