IMPORTANT THOUGHTS FROM THE Herbert Hoover High School COMMUNITY

THINGS PEOPLE APPRECIATE

Caring/Nurturing Teachers –

There are some teachers who go above and beyond to care, nurture, encourage, motivate and of course, teach their students. We need more of them!

Offering free tutoring after school. –

I think that this is an excellent idea. Hoover is showing its best towards its students, clearly trying to bring the best out of each student by helping them in any way possible. Great job.

Success: Pulling together saw the HTMB all the way to state championship. –

It brings joy to all the stakeholders to see that good results are achieved after putting in enormous amount of time and outstanding leadership of Dr Earl and the selfless instructions provided by her team in preparing the student to excel academically and in all fields of the school curriculum

Responsive counselors –

They are overburdened, but they try to accommodate students’ needs and requests.

Fantastic Communication –

Every week I want to know what is happening in my students life and Dr. Earl’s Sunday message is fantastic.

SOME CONCERNS

Challenging students to be ready for college –

Self-explanatory. Provide guidance, and ask for students and teachers to go beyond the “required” in order to provide proper foundation for college life, and eventually be assimilated into the workforce.

Quality of Computers or computer systems available for students –

The job market is changing drastically and competent computer skills are becoming a necessary job skill.

We don’t have enough intervention for students who are failing classes. –

I have many students who don’t have any study skills or enough support from home. They are failing not just my class, but several of their classes. They are reading far below grade level. I’d like to find a way to help them.

Parent support, security –

As a teacher, when the parents don’t support us, we are gutted. Not sure how to solve this, but when parents don’t support teacher efforts, it is a major issue. On Hoover’s campus, security is a joke. The district needs to pay more for this. Parts of campus have excessive students out during class.

Clarification/understanding expectations and needs –

OTHER THOUGHTS SHARED

Hoover has world class faculty. –

Our faculty are among the most distinguished in the district. We have published authors, a philharmonic member and faculty who teach at Hoover and local universities. We should publicize this strength more.

Banking days –

Every friday, we have banking days. I think it would be better if we start the same time in the morning and end early. That way, students could have more time for their extra curricular actuvities and homework.

Happy with the school and administration. –

Overall, I am glad that my children are at Hoover HS. They are happy and doing well, and that, I contribute to the school.

All teachers should be required to use Q for online gradebook –

If the district is paying for Q as the tool for teachers to do grades, the district should negotiate with the GTA to require that all teachers use the tool so that student progress is transparent to the parents and guardians. This means better communication with parents.

My only concerns are with the counseling department. –

I worry that the student load for counselors is too great and that some counselors at our school don’t know the kids well.
