IMPORTANT THOUGHTS FROM THE Glendale High School COMMUNITY

THINGS PEOPLE APPRECIATE

I appreciate highly motivated and dedicated teachers –

There are a few excellent teachers that teach because that’s their passion. Hence they bring out the best in their students by using best practices in education and interacting with students in a way that shows respect and care.

Vision, communication, teamwork, progression –

I feel as a whole that GHS has a clear vision with a plan to achieve its goal of transitioning to the common core curriculum. Support is provided by our administrative team. Communication is open, clear, and effective. Decisions are made collectively, and little by little, progress is being made.

Art Programs –

All the art programs are so very important. Music, Drama, Drill, Choir etc. More funding is needed for these programs.

Culture, education and sports –

At GHS we see different ethnicities everyday and we learn from one another. We all unite as one and support our school at sports, and there’s a club for everyone to be in.

The way teachers teach –

I appreciate the way the teachers this year are really working hard to teach students best way for students to learn.

SOME CONCERNS

All teachers should post upcoming test & current grades on Zangle. –

How many of you have teenagers that will come and tell you about their progress even if you ask?
My kid does but not all the time. I really like the school to communicate with teachers & coaches the importance of using Zangle. Zangle is the only source available for Prents to see kids progress…

Cleanliness of the school –

It’s a good feeling to go to a school that is clean. It encouraged and motivates student to attend school on a daily basis.

I’m concerned about overcrowding. –

Most of the classes that my child is in are rather large, but even more concerning is how over-taxed the guidance counselors are. I feel as if my child does not get sufficient attention from her counselor.

Mental Health Concerns –

I am concerned that, given the number of suicides and threat assessments, there are not enough resources to adequately address the emotional needs of students.

Concerned about drugs and smoking by students. –

I worry about my child being around kids who don’t care about listening to teachers and don’t worry about their health.

OTHER THOUGHTS SHARED

Weight of backpacks –

As a parent I am concerned about the number of binders, notebooks and other materials the children have to lug around the school every day. It is a great idea to have two sets of books: one at home and one at school. But the number of notebooks and binders is too many; please minimize.

This is a great school –

I don’t think the Glendale community understands what an excellent school this is. We have terrific programs, sports, clubs, academies, and arts at GHS. There are so many ways that kids can be involved in their school, and the quality of our different organizations are all top-notch.

More students seen out of class – lingering about. Security not checking. –

When kids are out of class they are not learning and can lead to trouble. Security needs to step it up and ask why and get kids where they belong (or other staff members too).

Publicize Accomplishments –

I think it’s important to publicize student and staff accomplishments and activities. I think that GHS is an under appreciated gem in the city.

The school needs to improve some of its facilities. –
