IMPORTANT THOUGHTS FROM THE Cerritos Elementary School COMMUNITY

THINGS PEOPLE APPRECIATE

There’s a great sense of team effort and work at the school site. –

There’s a positive environment and a sense of we are all in this together.

dissemination of information –

The school is very good at informing the parents of the different activities lined up for the week. The weekly phone reminders are great help for parents and students to know what to look forward to during the week.

Teachers –

The effort the teachers are making .. At least my kids teachers am sure are great and want the best for the kids.

Great leader! –

For being a brand new principal this year, Perla is doing an excellent job at maintaining the school and keeping everyone heard and happy!

No unauthorized adults on campus –

I love that everyone has to check into the main office prior to walking on campus.

SOME CONCERNS

Concerns that I have about my school this year is our library. –

Our library is a “Cybrary ” and houses 36 computers as well as a large collection of books, magazines, and reference materials. In the past it has always been open for 8 hours. This year we were told that our enrollment is low and we can no longer afford to pay for a library assistant at 8 hours wh

Exceso de alumnos (Overcrowding) –

Es difícil para los maestros impartir dos grados en un salón de clases aunque no dudo de la capacidad de ellos (It is difficult for teachers to teach two grades in one classroom but I do not doubt the ability of them)

Working technology. –

Technology keeps advancing but staff basic needs are not met when copy machines and printers don’t work.

Common Core Adjustments and Realigning Curriculum –

My only real concern at our school this year is about the “growing pains” with the new Common Core standards and adjusting and aligning our existing materials and finding adequate support materials to teach the new standards. This is probably a common thread across the nation right now.

Students being prepared for the SBAC. –

With the implementation of the SBAC this year, I am concerned if my child is being prepared for the test. The time it would take for the test to complete is very long for elementary students. Would they be able to handle the estimated 7hours long of test time? What are the modifications that the

OTHER THOUGHTS SHARED

Building a collaborative culture –

Teachers are working together beyond their grade level teams.

Great teaching staff –

All of my child’s teachers have been great and worked with her.

Ms.Chavez has made such a wonderful addition to the cerritos family and –

She keeps all of her students engaged and enjoy their time at school.

Team spirit is evident across the staff. –

Team spirit has been lacking in recent year but is quite evident this year. Everyone is willing to share ideas and strategies. People are volunteering to coach or train other teachers. More teachers are participating in after school intervention/ enrichment activities.

We are working hard to understand the CCSS –

It’s confusing and messy at times, but we are doing great work with the new standards and curriculum and I can’t wait to see how much we grow.
