IMPORTANT THOUGHTS FROM THE Allan F. Daily High School COMMUNITY

THINGS PEOPLE APPRECIATE

This survey –

I believe the idea of having public option is a wonderful step in order to discover the problems and solutions to improve our schools.

Small class size –

I appreciate how the staff works together as a team.

Collaboration between schools –

Our school has been able to collaborate with many different schools and GUSD departments and most experiences have been excellent and fruitful.

The unique population we serve as well as the well intention of the staff. –

The challenge presented by our students is a source of motivation and opportunity for further learning. Whereas well intention of the staff members allows for flexibility and creativity.

Administrative staff –

The adiministrative staff are wonderful and caring. The help that is provided to the troubled students beyond academics is a wonderful thing. I appreciate all of them from Dr. Valdes, to the therapist and the probation officer as well as the office workers.

SOME CONCERNS

Support to students –

I know that teenagers can sometimes be very difficult to deal with…I know this because of my son, but schools need to be more pro-active in facilitating a forum whether it’d be one on one or group support to better understand our teenage children.

Parent night –

School should have workshops for parents to hold to advise them or to give them ideas how to deal with teenagers.

Effective communication –

Effective communication among the members of the staff is important for growth and progress to be achieved. However, there seems to be continuous underlying tension among the members of the staff due to possible feelings of invalidation and lack of clear understanding of individual roles & duties.

Provide more computers –

Our students need to have access to computers, especially in high school level. We can’t refuse to give them computers because they are surfing other websites, but we can control the websites that they are using.

Getting more services to our at-risk students –

More counseling, drug and alcohol classes/counseling, parenting classes

OTHER THOUGHTS SHARED

The school is clean and organized, with a very friendly staff. –

Moving the focus from academic success to career preparation for students. –

Staff are starting to see how changing the focus from just academic success to preparing our students for their career pathways is not only good for the students but also helps address the common core standards. There is more work to be done in this area but all are willing to do it.

Your school is great for my son. I am very thankful. –

New immigrants –

Since every year we have hundreds of new students from all around the world, I would suggest to invite them more often to share their thoughts and concerns, assuring them they can participate in school activities and have their words.

Glad to be part of Daily High –

To instill hope and validation in our students who have been perceived as “failures” or “troubled” students in other academic setting, is where Daily High School’s success and mission difference from others. Therefore, supplying continuous individual motivation for the staff members.
